The majority of break-ins that occur through windows are a result of the windows being unlocked. Simply locking your windows will be a great deterrent to most thieves because:
Thieves generally break windows in order to release the lock and slide the window up. The following will help deter a thief looking to enter this way. This is a technique called “pinning”. We will hopefully be adding photos to this page soon.
1. Using a mid-sized drill bit, drill two holes, approximately 2 inches deep, into the window frame, approximately 2 inches above where the window will open
2. Insert one 3-1/2″ nails into each hole, make sure that the nails are big enough so that they will not fall out but that the hole is loose enough so that the nails can be easily removed.
This technique will insure that if someone attempts to come in through your window, they will need to do a lot of work if they want to get in.
We will be expanding this section with additional tips and solution suggestions in the near future.
