The Importance of a Family Security Plan
No disasters, accidents or burglar break-ins come with a warning. They can happen to anyone at any time.
When you are enjoying a relaxing Sunday afternoon with your family and disaster strikes, chances are everybody in the house will be clueless about what to do - unless you have already discussed how you will respond and prepared a family security plan.
In the chaos you will hardly be in a position to explain to your children about what is happening and what they are supposed to do.
Making a family security plan can help you avoid and manage dangerous situations that any of the family members may find themselves in.
A good security plan should take into consideration various kinds of situations while inside the house as well as when outdoors. It should also take into consideration different kinds of catastrophes or emergencies that can take place.
Situations for Which You Need a Security Plan
There are various situations that can potentially be dangerous. Make a list of the various accidents or events that could take place and put your family in danger.
Some of these can be:
- Someone breaks in your house when the family members are at home - Discuss what each one should do and then further drill down what should be done if some of the family members are outside. There should be a plan to warn those who are outside and a backup plan for who will take over their responsibilities.
- You enter the house and find that it has been robbed and ransacked - While this is a less dangerous situation and there is probably less likelihood of personal danger, you still need to ensure that the burglar is not still inside. Discuss and decide who should take the kids and leave the premises completely and who should be responsible for calling emergency services.
- An earthquake strikes suddenly and there is excessive shaking - Children should know what the best thing to do is in case of an earthquake. Discuss and decide: Should they stay in their rooms or should they come to their parent’s room? What is the best place to hide and how should they protect themselves?
- A tornado strikes and there is a sudden power outage - Storms can be scary for children and even for adults if they are as devastating as tornado's. If your children know what to do in such a situation they will not be caught unawares irrespective of whether they are indoors or outdoors.
Make emergency numbers available to everyone. Most of all rehearse these plans every 3 to 4 months to ensure each family member remembers his or her role and responsibilities.
Why Secure Your Doors?
An intruder can be in your home in 10 seconds. More than 85% of all break-ins are through a door.
If you own a gun, will you have enough time to reach it? If you're not at home, will your family be safe?
Only Armor Concepts reinforces all of the weak points of your door - the jamb, the lock area and the hinges. If all of those points are not reinforced, your door is not secure.
