Children begin to think that a jab or kick in the right place will give them the time they need to flee.
But the fact is that most of the moves you see in movies, well, they really only work in the movies.
This is a conversation you need to have with your children so that they are prepared in case they need to defend themselves from an attack.
If Possible, Walk or Run Away
It is best to follow your instincts when you feel something is wrong. If you feel that you are being followed, you need to make sure that you get to somewhere safe or public with people around as soon as you can.
Confrontation is not the best course of action at all times, especially when you are unarmed. Trying not to be superhero takes more effort than anything else. This is very important for your children to understand.
Weigh Your Options
If the attack is simply to take away some money, you might want to coach your children to just give the money and de-escalate the situation. This is something that they may need to do when there are weapons involved or if they get caught alone in an isolated area.
On the other hand, don’t make them cowards by succumbing to bullies in school. De-escalating the situation can also mean talking themselves out of it.
Avoiding a Situation Completely
There is no doubt that the best option is that your kids will never have to face an attack – at home, in school or anywhere else they may go. Make them understand that shortcuts are not likely to be the best option since they may take your children through isolated areas.
Allow your children to carry a cell phone – both so that you can track them, and they have a lifeline to help – at all times. Be aware of their schedule so you can recognize when something may be wrong.
And maybe most importantly, instill in them the need for the ‘buddy system’ to be used at all times – whether going to and from school, playing in the neighborhood or heading off to the mall or other recreational activity.
Self Defense – The Right Way
To help your child be better equipped to protect themselves from bullies or stranger attacks, it would be a great idea to enroll them in a proper self-defense course so that they know exactly how to handle these types of dangerous situations.
These defense classes not only teach self-defense techniques, but also explain how you can avoid situations and come out safely.
